Enter a Composition Competition Built for Recorder Composers

Orpheus Music publishes Australian music for the recorder, with over 70 composers and 300 works in our catalogue. Our composition competition gives writers a way to have a new piece published, promoted and performed. It sits alongside the recorder competitions and festivals we present in Armidale NSW. The catalogue spans a range of styles and genres for one to ten recorder players.

What a Winning Piece Can Earn

Winners may receive a publishing contract with Orpheus Music. Published works are promoted with a recording and sent for review in Recorder Magazine in the UK and The American Recorder Magazine in the USA. Winners are announced at the Australasian Recorder Festival, so the result reaches the people who play the instrument. We have run annual recorder composition competitions to encourage new Australian writing.

Entry Requirements at a Glance

Recent rounds asked for an original piece written in the last two years that had not won another composition competition. Pieces ran between three and ten minutes for solo recorder or for recorder with piano or harpsichord. Any recorder in the family could be used, from garklein to sub contrabass. Previous first place winners could not enter again. Entry begins with an application form through TryBooking, followed by an email with the score as a PDF.

What Entrants Receive

A panel of three judges with national or international recorder knowledge reviews each entry in our composition competition:

Publishing Opportunity

Winning works can join a broad catalogue of Australian recorder pieces.

Expert Judging

Judges with recorder knowledge read every score submitted.

Festival Stage

Winners are announced at the Australasian Recorder Festival in Armidale.

Send Your Score to the Judges

Complete the application form, then email your composition as a PDF score. Orpheus Music is ready to read your next recorder piece in this composition competition. We answer questions about the process by email.
